Work has begun on transforming what was formerly one of South Gloucestershire’s busiest roads into a unique green open space.
Highwood Road in Patchway was formerly a major route to The Mall and Cribbs Causeway, but traffic now uses the recently opened Hayes Way bypass.
Now the road will be converted into a ‘linear park’ which will incorporate a dedicated public transport route and a significant increase in green space with trees and park benches. The route will no longer be accessible to general traffic.
The work is being carried out as part of the neighbouring Charlton Hayes development, and is being funded entirely by the developer Bovis Homes.
Cllr Brian Allinson, South Gloucestershire Council’s (SGC’s) executive member for Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment said:
“The construction of this green space and bespoke bus road is important to provide the new community of Charlton Hayes with safe pedestrian and cycling links as well as access to the amenities of Patchway.”
“The creation of a new open space will also serve the community of Patchway well, offering more green areas and a connection to their new neighbours.”
Existing bus stops will be maintained as close as possible to their current position. Buses using the road will be required to adhere to a 20mph limit through the park.
The majority of work will take place after Christmas, but preparatory work got underway yesterday (Wednesday 30th August).

What is going to happen to coniston road at the highwood road end.will i be able to get to cribbs from that end?
hi when is this road going to be closed off to traffic, and where is cut off point as i depend on passing trade thanks roys autos patchway bristol bs34 5bu
It’s not clear exactly what is happening to the road lay out, one week cones here, next week cones there.
I have tried looking for the plans but cannot find the new proposed routes.
I live in cedar close, am I going to be cut off from the mall? rest of patchway? And is coniston road going to be used as a rat run as it always is at christmas?
Thankyou, Why change something that already works?, if needs be dig up the road stick another bus lane in, I only ever see 2 buses use the lane as it is. once an hour.

The carriageway near Charlton Hayes will be dug up completely, from the entrance into Charlton Hayes right upto the roundabout.
The north carriageway (past Walkers yard) between the roundabout and Coniston Rd traffic lights will become two way for all traffic. the rest of the carriageway between Coniston and the Traffic lights at Durban (Fire Station) will become a 2 way Bus lane.
Sycamore Drive is going to be blocked off, so anyone in the trees area will have to drive around Coniston to get to Rodway Road.
